Fermentation

Analysis
of Trace Volatile Compounds in Coffee by Means of Headspace
Concentration Technique and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry
Wang, T.T.
Ann Arbor, Mich.: University Microfilms International, 1981
The objective of this study was to develop and
standardize an experimental method for the analysis of trace
volatile organic compounds in coffee. This new technique involves
headspace sampling, heart cutting, collection and concentration
of the volatiles on a porous polymer (Tenax-GC), followed
by sensory evaluation and two dimensional GC. A 0.2% Carbowax
1500 coated on 80/100 Carbopack C packed column was employed
for the initial separation, while a chemically bonded phase
fused silica column served as the analytical column. A number
of aroma related organic volatile compounds in coffee have
been separated and identified in this study.

Wild
Teas Coffees and Cordials
Stewart, H.
Vancouver: Douglas and Macintyre, 1981
Few people realize how simple it is to
recognize and collect wild plants that make a tempting selection
of winter and summer drinks. The author's unique volume focusses
on interesting alternatives to the high-priced, expensively
packaged teas, coffees, lemonades and other drinks of the
supermarket. Surprisingly, many of the plants for such alternatives
can be found growing wild in city and suburban areas. Illustrating
50 plants of Western Canada and the Northwestern States, the
author's finely worked line drawings are reproduced full page
to make this book as appealing as it is useful. It guides
you through the finding, identifying and harvesting of the
plants, shows easy methods of preservation and storage, and
includes recipes for 60 drinks.
