About ASIC

The Association Scientifique Internationale du
Café (ASIC) was founded in 1966 following two coffee
colloquia organised in Paris by the Institut Français
du Café et du Cacao (IFCC) with the target of setting
up a body which would periodically bring together coffee specialists
from all over the world.
The objectives and mode of operation of the ASIC as defined
in the by-laws (art. 1) are:
- to distribute as widely as possible scientific,
technical and applied knowledge concerning coffee,
- to contribute to the permanent update of this
knowledge by this distribution, and
- to facilitate exchanges between experts from
similar and/or different disciplines.
Members may be individual scientists and companies,
associations, chambers of commerce, research institutes, foundations,
etc.
During the twenty colloquia organised since
1963, ASIC has dealt with the main topics associated with
coffee research, such as:
- agronomy in all its aspects: genetics, botany,
physiology, agrotechnics, pests and diseases, etc.;
- chemistry: techniques used in coffee analysis,
chemical composition, aroma, etc.;
- technology: green coffee processing, roasting,
grinding, extraction, decaffeination, etc.;
- physiological effects: coffee and health;
- packaging, storage, etc.
The proceedings of the different colloquia published
by the ASIC provide the texts of all the contributions presented
in full.
This series of publications, the authors of which
are amongst the most eminent international specialists in
their fields, consists of over thousand articles. It provides
an original source of exceptional technical and scientific
information relevant to coffee trees and coffee, that is indispensable
to both scientists and professionals.
These publications can be consulted at or purchased
from the ASIC office.
The Table of Contents of all Proceedings can be consulted
from this Web site. For the most recent issues, abstracts
are also available. Restricted access to full papers is only
possible for the Proceedings of the 19th (Trieste, 2001) and 20th (Bangalore, 2004) conferences. In any case, copies of individual articles may be ordered
from ASIC office.
ASIC is the only completely independent organisation
in the world whose scientific vocation is specifically devoted
to the coffee tree, the coffee bean and the coffee drink.
It is also the only one which, through its periodical international
colloquia, offers specialists in different disciplines the
possibility of meeting and becoming familiar with each other's
work.
